Azo Portfolio
Azo Portfolio
The Azo Portfolio was originally published in 2006 by Michael A. Smith and Paula Chamlee in order to raise money for the herculean task of getting a new gelatin silver chloride contact printing paper made to replace Kodak’s discontinued Azo.
Two of these rare portfolios are being offered for sale, #7/10 and #8/10.
The Azo Portfolio contains ten vintage photographs printed by the photographers— five 8x20-inch gelatin silver contact prints by Smith and five 8x10-inch gelatin silver contact prints by Chamlee, archivally mounted and overmatted, plus two sheets of deckle-edged BFK Rives paper printed letterpress.
All are signed and numbered by the photographers and housed in a beautiful handmade pale gray linen portfolio box with silver stamping
Smith’s prints are valued at a minimum of $5,000 each and Chamlee’s at a minimum of $2,500 each. This $37,500 value in prints is being offered at $15,500 for portfolio #7 and $16,500 for Portfolio #8. Prices do not include shipping and insurance.
Before Michael passed away in 2018, he had accomplished a remarkable photographing and teaching career for over 50 years. His photographs are collected in more than 125 museums worldwide.
Paula remains active in her photographing career of 35 years and is collected in over 45 museums to date. Smith and Chamlee have had innumerable exhibitions, and both have seven published monographs of their photographs, with more in the works.
