THE PORTFOLIOS OF BRETT WESTON

A NINETEEN-VOLUME SERIES

Between 1939 and 1980 Brett Weston produced eighteen limited edition portfolios of original photographs. He believed passionately in the power of his original prints and chose the portfolio as the way to reach an expanded audience while still maintaining control over image quality. Today, Weston’s original portfolios are rare, expensive, and relatively inaccessible in museums, archives, libraries, or private collections.

Printing technology now makes it possible, however, to bring the Brett Weston portfolios to a larger audience in reproductions that, in their rich detail, tonal scale and color, surface quality, and aesthetic appeal, are almost indistinguishable from the original prints. Printed in Belgium by Salto in unprecedented 600-line screen quadtone, and later by Dual Graphics in 400-line screen quadtone (after Salto ceased printing books). Printed on heavy coated stock, the photographs have been reproduced actual size whenever possible.

To recreate the feeling of the original portfolios, great care has been taken not only with the reproduction of the photographs, but with every aspect of these books. Where there is text in the portfolios, it is reproduced in facsimile, and the color of each book’s cover has been selected to match the covers of the original portfolio cases.

The art historian Roger Aikin, a close friend of Brett’s, has provided an introductory essay for each book in the series with writing that sets the photographs in the context of Weston’s life and career. Dr. Aikin’s critical analysis comparing the photographs of Brett and those of his father was published in 1973 and remains the finest analysis of its type we have ever seen.

brett_europe_005.jpg

Many of the photographs in these new books have never before been reproduced. The hardbound edition is limited to 250 numbered copies and the softbound edition is limited to 1000 copies.

In addition to the 16 portfolios there are 3 additional volumes in the series. Number 17, Prints for Students, is a collection of prints that Brett offered to students at a significantly discounted price. Number 18 is the Special Edition of 1951. Number 19 is a Career Overview by the art historian Roger Aikin. Also included in the Career Overview is a “Memoir” by the Michael A. Smith, who knew Brett well and who is the publisher of Lodima Press books. Numbers 18 and 19 are contained in the same binding making 18 books in the set.

The hardbound copies were originally available only to subscribers to the entire series. A very limited number remain from subscriptions that were cancelled, and are available individually. The price for each of these is currently $250. Still fewer complete sets of the hardbound books are available. These complete sets are currently priced at $3000.

The softbound edition is limited to 1000 copies, and books are available individually for $59.95 to $79.95 each. The entire softbound set is discounted to $895.

Brett Weston - White Sands
from $74.95

Volume 2 in the Portfolios of Brett Weston series

Introduction by Nancy Newhall
Afterword by Roger Aikin

The original White Sands portfolio, produced in 1949, contained twelve photographs and was printed in an edition of fifty. In 1975 Weston printed a second edition of the portfolio in an edition of seventeen. It included eight of the original ten photographs made in the 1940s (negatives from two of the photographs in the original portfolio were damaged and unprintable), two others from the 1940s that had not been included in the first portfolio (Plates 11 and 12), and two from 1975 (Plates 13 and 14), for a total of twelve prints.

White Sands contains the original ten photographs plus the four new pictures from Weston's 1975 edition. The original 1949 title page and the introduction by Nancy Newhall are reproduced in facsimile. Included is an afterword by art historian Roger Aikin. As a bonus, we have included an additional photograph along with a facsimile reproduction of Brett's letter describing the picture as "Edward's favorite." Although it was not included in either of the original portfolios, Brett included it as a gift with the portfolio from which this book has been reproduced.

Volume 10 in the Portfolios of Brett Weston

10 Photographs made from 1929 to 1942

This portfolio contains a series of portraits made of his father, Edward Weston, between 1929 and 1942. As Roger Aikin explains in the Afterword, although it is not generally acknowledged, Brett influenced his father as much as Edward influenced him. Brett always graciously acknowledged his debt to his father. That he would compose a portfolio only of portraits of Edward is a generous mark of his love and respect.

Ansel Adams contributed an Introduction to Portraits of My Father.

Paula Chamlee - High Plains Farm
from $95.00

Photographs and Text by Paula Chamlee
Foreword by George Thompson

Limited to an edition of 2,750 regular hardbound copies and a signed, numbered, custom-bound and slipcased limited edition of 250.

Published in cooperation with the Center for American Places: 1996

After thirty-three years, Paula Chamlee returned home to photograph and write about the farm where she grew up on the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, a farm where her parents, now in their late eighties, still farm their 1,100 acres all by themselves. With intensity and insight, she has created a work of extraordinary depth and cultural significance. This emotionally charged and aesthetically powerful document provides an intimate look at her home place and reveals a way of life and value system that are quickly vanishing.

Every detail in the production of this exquisite book was supervised by the photographer and produced to the exacting standards that are a hallmark of Lodima Press. The photographs, from 8x10-inch and 5x7-inch contact prints, are reproduced on heavy cover stock by Gardner Lithograph with exceptional fidelity to the tonal delicacy and luminosity of the original prints. A sturdy and elegant French-fold dust jacket protects and complements this fine book.

Chamlee's writing in the introduction sets her photographs in the context of Texas history and her family heritage. In addition, her extensive "Notes on the Photographs" provides information and insights about the pictures and evokes the flavor of farm life in the twentieth century. In the Foreword, George F. Thompson meditates on the profound place that rural life, especially the family farm, still holds in the nation's collective imagination and memory. The combination of photographs and writing inHigh Plains Farm creates a book that will find a place of enduring value and significance not only in Texas art and history, but also in the archives of American art and cultural studies.

Arno Rafael Minkkinen - Balanced Equation
from $39.95

Volume 14 in the Lodima Press Portfolio Book Series

The surprise of the unpredictable guides my photography. The ideas aren’t conceived inside my viewfinder; their appearance happens first inside my mind. What the camera sees only becomes visible weeks, months, or sometimes years later when I process the film.

Mind games help quell the fear part. Not wishing to fall off a cliff, I tell myself I am on a mountaintop under the sea. Now falling just means diving deeper into the abyss. Or, when there is trepidation in the presence of beauty I tell myself not to worry, fingers don’t tremble at a sixtieth of a second.

Touch, bend, reach, suspend, descend, circle, submerge, climb, grab, and hold: these are the verbs of my photographic life. They vary as much as time and place varies. For forty years now, nothing has changed; destiny and desire hang in the balance while I wait for the shutter.

It is all about chance discoveries, handshakes with good fortune, and that unquenchable wish to express the pleasure of being alive in the natural world as it was meant to exist. — Arno Rafael Minkkinen

Previously unpublished photographs from Tice's urban landscapes series. They were taken in the 1990s, a period when Tice was especially prolific.

Common Mementos is akin to a short story, a short film, an essay. It is my attempt to define and interpret the New Jersey with which I was familiar. I think of it as a journey in time as well as place. — George Tice

About Lodima Press

Founded by Michael A. Smith to self-publish his first book, Landscapes 1975–1979, which was awarded Le Grand Prix du Livre (Best Photography Book of the Year) at the Rencontres de la Photographie (International Festival of Photography), Arles, France, in 1981. In the 38 years since, and in partnership with photographer Paula Chamlee, Lodima Press has come to be known for its unwavering dedication to reproductions of the highest quality (printing most books in 600-line screen quadtone), and publishing books of exquisite beauty by a number of leading and emerging photographers. We also provide consulting services for photographers seeking guidance in getting their work ready to submit for publication or to self-publish.
